poetry

give the moon

I remembered this old poem of mine today…and the use of the word “lunge” in it.

Written years ago after my friend, the poet Hoa Nguyen, and I collaborated by first making collages, mailing them to one another, then using the other’s collage to inspire a poem. This is what I wrote inspired by her collage—and yes, there was an image of a baby with a mustache! At the time, circa 2003 or 2004, we were both deeply immersed in the birthing and raising of our babies.

Give the moon
for Hoa, in celebration of our continued soul connection & friendship

Give the moon, I said
Pulling myself from a place
Little, small and tasty
Negotiating this   restricted
area

Bright light             flip flop insides
When I left the world
that day
Baby with a mustache cried
              peel it back
to reveal the seed

It’s time to
lunge               and let
Mandalas be rife with meaning
